ETOBICOKE – Humber baseball (4-4, 4th OCAA) opened its homestand with a tough setback on Saturday afternoon, dropping a home doubleheader to the Fanshawe Falcons (6-2, 2nd OCAA) for the first time in program history.

Game one (Fanshawe 5, Humber 1)

After sweeping the Sheridan Bruins in Mississauga to get back in the win column, the Hawks returned to Connorvale Park to open their homestand. The doubleheader against the Fanshawe Falcons carried extra weight as both teams entered with a 4-2 record and a chance to gain ground on the league leaders. A positive result here could propel either team into the race for the top of the standings.

Second-year pitcher Owen Marshall got the start on the mound and made quick work of the first inning, retiring the lineup in order with two strikeouts. Humber struck first in the bottom of the second inning, as Isaac Duva reached home plate on a sacrifice fly from Parker Deans.

In the top of the third, Fanshawe threatened loading the bases, but a double play from third baseman David Boatto to catcher Julian Iannarella to first baseman Xavier Whittle got the Hawks out of trouble. The defensive momentum was short-lived, though, as a fielding error in right allowed the Falcons to bring home two runs.

The visitors added to their lead in the fourth on another sacrifice fly before Connor Rodwin delivered the dagger in the seventh with a two-run homer.

Humber's bats remained cold and the Hawks dropped the opener of the twin bill, 5-1.

Game two (Humber 0, Fanshawe 9)

Starting pitcher Lucas Bridger faced a Falcons lineup that picked up right where it left off in game one, scoring two early runs in the opening frame.

While the Hawks struggled to spark their offence, defensive errors continued to plague their game. Head coach Troy Black turned to the bullpen, bringing in Mark Rizzotto, but by the end of the third inning, Humber already trailed by eight.

In the fourth, Falcons' Jud McGowan crushed a solo homer to push Fanshawe further ahead and put Humber on the brink of being mercy-ruled at Connorvale Park for the first time in program history. The Hawks held off in the fifth, but the deficit proved too much to overcome.

Humber fell 9-0, marking the first time in program history they dropped a home doubleheader to the Fanshawe Falcons at Connorvale Park.
