ETOBICOKE – It was a chilly Thursday evening under the lights at Connorvale Park, as Humber baseball (2-1, 2nd OCAA) recorded its first loss of the season against the Sheridan Bruins (2-3, 5th OCAA), falling 11-8. Jack Young helped bring the Hawks back into the game, finishing with a team-high three RBIs.

Game Recap (Sheridan 11, Humber 8)

After a hot start to the season against the Sault Cougars in Sarnia, Ont., Humber returned to the Hawks Nest with momentum to face off against the Sheridan Bruins for a second consecutive year.

Coach Troy Black chose first-year pitcher Dylan Clement from the dugout to lead the Hawks, but the Bruins' offence came out hot from the beginning.

Early in the game, fans could see the Hawks were off to a cold start, as they watched the Sheridan Bruins take a quick 4-0 lead. Shaky defence behind the rookie pitcher put the Hawks in a hole early, leading to two unearned runs.

In the bottom half of the first, fourth-year outfielder Jack St. Louis stole home after a pickoff attempt at second base, putting Humber on the board.

In the top of the third, the fans tried to keep the momentum high as Coach Black turned to the bullpen, sending out TMU transfer Ryan Brando, who stepped up to the mound, with the hope of giving Humber a fresh start. However, the Hawks would only dig themselves into a deeper hole as walks and errors would extend the Bruins' lead to seven.

With the Humber's momentum a low, third-year pitcher and Mark Rizzotto came to relieve Ryan Bando during the top half of the third, inducing a ground ball to end the inning.

In the home half of the inning, the Hawks had the bases loaded as second-year Julian Iannarella shot one into right field, resulting in a single, and another run for the blue and gold. Humber trailed by eight with a score of 10-2.

In the next frame, Coach Black retired Mark Rizzoto, bringing in Eric Alcaraz, a fifth-year player to relieve him. The Mississauga native would wrap up the top half quickly with a one, two, three inning.

Humber's offence finally showed some signs of life in the sixth inning, putting five runs on the board. Jack Young drove a deep fly ball to the left-centre warning track, pushing across three more runs for Humber. Unfortunately for the Hawks, that is all they could muster, ending the game, 11-8.
